The cheapest months to move in London
AdWe may earn a commission if you get a quote through these links. It costs you nothing, and it never affects our scores or rankings — those come from public data alone.
Removals is a business with a fixed number of vans and crews, and demand that is nothing like evenly spread. The consequence is that the same job — same flat, same distance, same amount of stuff — costs meaningfully different amounts depending on when you book it.
Unlike most moving costs, this one is partly within your control.
The three cycles
Demand stacks up on three separate rhythms, and the worst days are where all three coincide.
The year. Summer is peak, driven by school holidays and the academic calendar. Late August is the single busiest stretch in London — university terms starting, families moving before the school year, and tenancy cycles that follow both. Winter is the trough, with a hard exception around Christmas and New Year.
The month. Month end dominates, because tenancies and completions cluster there. The last two working days of a month are the most contested slots in the calendar.
The week. Friday is the busiest day by a distance — people move Friday to have the weekend to unpack. Monday to Wednesday is consistently quieter.
The worst possible slot in London is therefore the last Friday in August. The best is a Tuesday in the middle of a winter month.
What off-peak actually buys you
Price is the obvious part, but it is not the biggest benefit.
Better crews. In peak season, firms run at capacity and bring in temporary staff. Off-peak you are more likely to get the experienced permanent crew.
Actual choice. In late August the question is who is available; in February it is who is best. That is the difference between accepting a quote and comparing several.
Slack in the day. A crew doing two jobs is rushing. A crew doing one is not, and rushed moves are where things get broken.
Room to reschedule. If your completion date slips by three days in February, the firm can probably still do it. In August they cannot.
What you cannot control, and what to do instead
Most people do not choose their moving date freely. Tenancy ends, completion dates and job start dates set it, and the day is what it is.
Two things still help.
Book earlier. The single most reliable lever. Prices rise as a date approaches and availability disappears. Eight weeks out for peak season is not excessive.
Get more than one quote, and be specific about the difficult parts. Firms price stairs, parking distance and self-packing differently, and the spread between quotes for one job is often wider than the seasonal difference. Comparing several quotes at once is the fastest way to see it, and our directory of London removal firms marks British Association of Removers membership borough by borough.
The thing worth more than any of this
Moving cheaply is a small optimisation. Moving to the wrong area is an expensive one, and unlike the van, you cannot rebook it.
If your date is fixed and inconvenient, the money is better spent on getting the destination right than on chasing a cheaper Tuesday. Crime, transport, schools and green space for all 33 boroughs are on the borough pages — Hackney, Croydon, Ealing and the rest — each ranked against the others, and the map covers all 283 postcode districts.
The full cost picture is in what it actually costs to move within London, and the sequencing in the moving timeline.
